Chapter 1: The Brother Who Raised Me

My in-laws laughed at my brother because of his height as he walked me down the aisle — what happened next made 200 guests fall silent and burst into tears.
I was eight when our parents died, and my 19-year-old brother, Matthew, became the only family I had.
He has dwarfism, but to me, that was never what defined him.
He was the brother who worked extra shifts to give me a normal childhood.
So when I got engaged, there was never a question.
Matt would walk me down the aisle.
My fiancé, Ryan, smiled.
"Of course he will."
But his parents didn't.
At dinner, his mother, Selena, stared at me as if I had just ruined the entire wedding.
"Wait.
You're serious?
Your brother is actually walking you down the aisle in front of 200 people?"
"Yes.
He raised me."
She exchanged a look with her husband and gave a little laugh.
"Honey, people are going to stare.
And he'll be in every single photo.
We're paying for a beautiful, elegant wedding, not for everyone to spend the ceremony whispering about your brother."
His father leaned back in his chair.
"I think that buys us the right to make sure it doesn't look ridiculous."
Ryan's chair scraped backward.
"Then keep your money.
Matt walks her down that aisle, or there is no wedding."
They backed down, but the comments didn't stop.
Selena told the photographer to "avoid full-length shots." His father suggested another man walk beside Matt "so it looks less awkward."
Two days before the wedding, they asked if Matt could enter through a side door.
I refused.
On my wedding day, Matt stood beside me in his suit, his hand trembling in mine.
"You sure you want me?" he whispered.
My throat tightened.
"You're the only person I ever wanted."
The doors opened.
Two hundred guests rose to their feet.
Halfway down the aisle, I heard laughter.
Selena hid her smile behind her program while his father leaned toward her, grinning.
As we passed, she whispered,
"At least the photographer can crop it."
Matt's fingers tightened around mine, but he kept walking.
At the altar, he kissed my cheek.
"Mom and Dad would be proud."
I became the happiest wife in the world, married to the most wonderful man, with my brother right there beside me.
But I could still hear my in-laws snickering as they talked about Matt and how he had "ruined" the wedding.
I was furious, but Ryan asked me not to do anything just yet.
When Matt stood up to give his toast, tears filled my eyes.
He gently tapped his glass to get everyone's attention and smiled at me.
Then he said the last thing I ever expected to hear.
"To my sister's dear new in-laws…" he said, clearing his throat.
