Chapter 1: The List That Changed Everything

My son-in-law gave us rules for visiting my pregnant daughter in the hospital — rule number 9 made me call her doctor.
My daughter, Claire, was scheduled to give birth to her first baby on Monday.
Two days before, her husband, Jason, sent our family a list titled:
"Hospital rules."
At first, I understood.
No surprise visitors.
Wash your hands.
No kissing the baby.
Only two people in the room at once.
Then I reached rule number 9.
"Do not discuss Claire's previous pregnancy with any doctor or nurse."
I read it twice.
Claire had never been pregnant before.
At least, not that I knew of.
I immediately called Jason.
"What previous pregnancy?"
There was a long pause.
"It's a mistake."
"Then why does it specifically say Claire?"
"Just ignore it."
He hung up.
Something felt wrong.
So I called Claire.
No answer.
Then I did something I normally never would have done.
I called her doctor's office.
"I'm Claire's mother.
I received a strange message from her husband."
The receptionist couldn't discuss Claire's records, which I expected.
But when I mentioned Rule 9...
her tone suddenly shifted.
"Can you read the exact wording?"
I did.
Silence.
Then she said:
"Please hold."
A minute later, Claire's doctor came on the line.
"Where is your daughter right now?"
"At home, I think."
"You think?"
My stomach tightened.
"What's happening?"
"I can't disclose her medical information without permission.
But I need you to tell me one thing.
Did Claire send those rules?"
"No.
Jason did."
The doctor went silent.
Then:
"Do not confront him.
I'm calling your daughter."
I grabbed my keys.
Before I reached my car, Claire finally called.
"Where are you?"

What is Jason hiding — and did Claire know about it all along?
