Chapter 3: Four Words From a Stranger

I stared at the message.

*This isn't her first time.*

No name.

No number I recognized.

Just those four words sitting on my screen while the wedding venue hummed around me — guests murmuring, chairs scraping, someone's child laughing too loud near the back row.

Ryan was still looking at his mother.

I closed my hand around the phone.

"We need to start," I said.

My voice came out steadier than I expected.

"We can talk about this after."

His mother straightened.

"Yes.

Let's not make a scene."

"You already made one," Ryan said.

He didn't look at her again.

He took my hand and walked me toward the ceremony room.

We got married.

It was beautiful in the way that real things are — imperfect, slightly rushed, emotionally raw.

My hair was half-done and I didn't care.

Ryan cried when he saw me.

I cried too.

The officiant made a small joke about the time change that nobody laughed at except my maid of honor, Donna, who laughed too loudly on purpose just to fill the silence.

His mother sat in the front row with her hands folded in her lap and a smile that never reached her eyes.

I kept the phone in my bouquet hand.

I know that sounds strange.

But I couldn't let it go.

---

The reception was held in the garden adjoining the venue.

String lights, round tables, a small band that played too quietly.

My mother found me near the drink station twenty minutes in.

"You look pale," she said.

"I'm fine."

"Sarah."

I showed her the message.

She read it twice.

"Who sent this?"

"I don't know."

She handed the phone back.

"Find out.

Tonight."

I slipped away from the reception just after the first dance.

The garden had a side path that led to a small stone terrace — private, quiet, out of earshot.

I typed back to the unknown number.

*Who is this?*

Three dots appeared immediately.

Then stopped.

Then appeared again.

*Someone who was at Ryan's brother's wedding four years ago.*

I sat down on the terrace wall.

Ryan had a brother.

Daniel.

Daniel had married a woman named Claire four years ago, and the marriage had lasted eleven months.

Ryan had never told me exactly why it ended.

He said it was complicated.

He said Claire and his mother hadn't gotten along.

He said Daniel didn't like to talk about it.

I typed: *What happened at that wedding?*

The response took longer this time.

*The same thing that almost happened to yours.

Except Claire didn't make it in time.

She walked in after the ceremony had already started.

Daniel thought she'd changed her mind.

His mother told him Claire had cold feet.

He almost called it off at the altar.*

My chest went tight.

*Did Daniel ever find out the truth?*

*No.

Claire tried to tell him.

He didn't believe her.

His mother convinced him Claire was unstable.

They were divorced within the year.*

I stood up.

The string lights from the garden glowed faintly through the hedgerow.

I could hear the band starting a new song.

*Why are you telling me this now?*

One more message came through.

Short.

Final.

May you like

*Because she's going to try again.

And next time it won't be the ceremony.*
