Chapter 2: The Coordinator Who Knew Too Much

Before I could even respond, Ryan stepped between us.
"Mom," he said, his voice low and controlled.
"Did you call Sarah this morning?"
She waved her hand.
"I assumed someone passed the message along."
"Her number is in your phone.
You've had it for two years."
She smiled again — that same sweet, practiced smile.
"I must have forgotten, sweetheart.
These things happen."
That's when I noticed something.
The wedding coordinator, Janet, was standing a few feet away, clutching her clipboard, eyes down.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
I walked over to her quietly.
"Janet.
Did Ryan's mother call you this morning?"
Janet hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"What time?"
"Around nine," she said softly.
"She told me to move everything up and not to contact you directly.
She said you already knew."
I turned back around.
Ryan had heard every word.
His face had gone completely still — the kind of still that comes right before something breaks.
His mother's smile finally slipped.
Just slightly.
But enough.
"Ryan, I only wanted the day to go smoothly—"
"You wanted her to miss it," he said quietly.
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
And that's when my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
Four words.
*This isn't her first time.*
