Chapter 8: What My Mother Had Hidden

Nathan stared at the envelope.

“You promised you wouldn’t tell her.”

“I promised because I was frightened,” Mom said.

“That promise is hurting her now.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside were invoices from a specialist clinic and receipts for travel and accommodation.

I looked from Mom to Nathan.

“This money wasn’t for the wedding.”

“No,” Nathan said.

“It paid for my second opinion,” Mom whispered.

“My insurance would not cover the consultation, and I had already decided not to go.”

My hands began to shake.

“Why didn’t you ask me?”

“Because you were already postponing plans and missing work for me.”

“You are my mother.”

“And you are my daughter.

I wanted you to have something in your life that wasn’t about c@ncer.”

Nathan moved closer but didn’t touch me.

“I borrowed the money before I was laid off.

When I lost my job, I let you believe it had covered wedding deposits because I was afraid the truth would upset your mother.”

“It did cover one deposit,” Mom said.

“He used what remained after my appointment.”

I looked at him through tears.

“You still lied.”

“Yes.”

“Kindness doesn’t make the lie disappear.”

“No.” His voice cracked.

“If you walk away from me because of it, I will understand.

But I won’t hide behind what I did for your mother.”

Mom squeezed my fingers.

“I asked him to keep quiet, but he chose to agree.

Don’t excuse either of us.”

I pressed the invoices against my chest.

“I nearly lost both of you today—one to her cruelty and one to your secrecy.”

Nathan’s eyes filled.

“I am here, and I will answer every question.

No excuses.

No missing messages.

No private debts.”

Isabella scoffed.

“How touching.

He deceives her, and somehow it becomes proof that he’s noble.”

I faced her.

“No.

It becomes something he and I must repair.

You don’t get to use it as permission for what you did.”

She drew out her bank card again.

“Then take my offer.

Protect your mother from more embarrassment, protect Nathan from debt, and tell everyone the photograph was misleading.”

“No.”

“Fourteen thousand dollars is a great deal of money.”

“My mother almost missed my wedding because of you.”

“And your husband lied to your face.”

“He admitted it when I asked.”

“Because I forced him to.”

“You revealed it because you thought it would break us.”

Isabella’s fingers tightened around the card.

“It still might.”

Nathan stood beside me.

“That will be our decision, not yours.”

Evan’s phone rang.

He listened, then smiled for the first time.

“The venue owner has reviewed the evidence.

The reception will continue.”

Isabella spun around.

“On whose authority?”

“His.

We will pursue the disputed payment through the card company and the contract process.

The couple will not be required to settle it tonight.”

“You cannot serve food I paid for.”

“You disputed the payment before service.

You no longer control this event.”

Nathan took the microphone.

“Mom, you are leaving.”

“You’ll throw me out after everything I gave you?”

“I’m asking security to escort you out after everything you did to my wife.”

Isabella looked at me.

“If you let him do this, I will never forgive you.”

“I’m not asking for your forgiveness.”

She turned toward Nathan.

“I can still help you buy the house.

Walk me to the door, apologize, and this ends.”

“No more money.”

“You say that now.”

“I’m saying it in front of everyone so I cannot pretend tomorrow that I didn’t.”

Evan motioned to two security employees.

Isabella pulled away when they approached.

“Don’t touch me.

I can walk.”

Ruth stepped aside.

“You should have walked away before you put your heel on that dress.”

Isabella paused beside Nathan.

“One day she will turn you against everyone, and you’ll remember that your mother warned you.”

Nathan opened the door.

“No, Mom.

I’ll remember that my wife told the truth while you tried to sell me silence.”

Isabella crossed the threshold, but Evan’s assistant came running down the corridor.

“Wait.

The finance office found a refund request.”

Evan read the document she handed him.

It carried my name beneath a request to send four thousand eight hundred dollars to a private account.

I had never seen it before.

He looked toward Isabella.

May you like

“The destination account belongs to you.”

The security employees closed the outer doors before she could reach the parking lot.
