Chapter 1: The Smile Above the Lace

My MIL stepped on my wedding dress and tore it open in front of our guests—what my husband did after seeing one photo made her turn white.

My MIL, Isabella, had been upset about my wedding dress before she'd even seen it.

When I went dress shopping, I took only my mom.

It wasn't meant as an insult.

Mom and I had talked about dress shopping since I was a teenager.

After she was diagnosed with c@ncer, that special tradition suddenly meant everything to me.

I didn't know how many milestones we'd still get together, and I wanted this one to be ours.

But when Isabella learned, she took it personally.

"So I'm good enough to help pay for flowers, but not important enough to see you choose the dress?"

I apologized and explained.

She didn't care.

From then on, whenever the wedding came up, Isabella found a way to mention that I'd "made it clear whose family mattered."

When she eventually saw my dress at the rehearsal, her eyes went straight to the long lace train.

"That's what you chose?"

I smiled.

"I love it."

"It's very...

dramatic."

Then she laughed.

"Just don't expect everyone to spend the day watching where they step."

I should've recalled those words.

On our wedding day, I felt stunning.

My mom fastened the last button with shaking fingers and whispered, "You look exactly how I always imagined."

Hours later, during the reception, my husband, Nathan, and I were crossing the dance floor toward our photographer when I suddenly felt myself jerk backward.

Then came an awful ripping sound.

People gasped.

I looked down.

Isabella's high heel was planted squarely on my train.

A long tear had ripped through the lace.

For a second, nobody moved.

"Oh!" Isabella cried, lifting her foot.

"I didn't see it!"

My eyes filled immediately.

That dress had survived fittings, alterations, the ceremony, and hundreds of photographs.

Isabella looked at the damage and sighed.

"Well, I did warn you that train was too long."

Nathan's face changed.

"Mom."

"What?

It was an accident."

My bridesmaids hurried me away before I started crying in front of everyone.

Twenty minutes later, while they tried to pin the torn lace from underneath, our photographer knocked on the bridal-suite door.

"Nathan needs to see something."

She turned her camera around.

She'd been taking candid shots just before the dress tore.

Nathan scrolled through them without a word.

Then he stopped.

In the photo, Isabella wasn't looking ahead.

She was looking directly down at my train.

Her heel hovered above the lace.

And there was the faintest smile on her face.

Nathan gazed at the screen for several seconds.

Then he handed the camera back.

"Stay here," he told me.

His voice was frighteningly calm.

He walked back into the reception.

And less than five minutes later, Isabella's face turned white when she realized what her son had just done.
