I didn't move.
Gloria looked smaller than I remembered.
No friends beside her.
No sharp smile.
Just a woman standing in the cold, holding a red envelope with both hands.
"Gloria.
What is this?"
She swallowed hard.
"It's from Amara and Liam."
I blinked.
"What?"
"They…
sent me a Christmas card." Her voice cracked.
"They made it themselves.
Glitter.
Crayon.
Little handprints on the front."
She held the envelope out toward me.
Her hands were shaking.
"I didn't deserve this.
I know that."
I didn't take it.
Not yet.
"You called them fake.
In front of everyone.
In front of them."
"I know what I said." A tear slid down her face.
"Hannah, I know."
I heard small footsteps behind me.
Amara appeared at my side, looked up at Gloria, and said the four words that made my breath stop completely.
"Grandma, you came back."
Gloria's face collapsed.
And then she said something I never expected — something about why she'd really stayed away all those months that had nothing to do with the adoption at all.
