Chapter 1: The Day She Called Them Fake

My MIL called my kids "fake grandkids" because they're adopted — months later, she showed up at my door with a red envelope

I spent $30,000 trying to become a mother.

At 38, after everything we'd tried had failed, my husband Andrew and I finally made a different decision.

"What if we…

Adopt?"

Andrew stared at me.

"I'm not against it.

But if we do this…

let's adopt two.

So they won't be alone."

Seven months later, we met Amara and Liam.

They weren't biological siblings, but they'd become inseparable.

Amara had deep brown eyes; Liam stood behind her clutching a battered teddy bear like a shield.

We signed the paperwork two days later.

I sent the news and a photo to our family.

Most of them were happy for us.

Becoming their mom wasn't instant or easy.

There were slammed doors, tears, and nights when all I could do was sit nearby and wait.

But slowly, they started trusting us.

The one person I worried about was Andrew's mother, Gloria.

She'd already made it clear that she didn't see adoption the way we did.

Still, when we planned a small welcome party for the kids, I invited her.

"She loves children.

She'll come around," Andrew assured me.

I wanted to believe him.

Instead, Gloria arrived with two friends.

At first, they stared at Amara and Liam.

Then one of them laughed.

"Oh my.

They're…

not at all what I expected."

My stomach tightened.

But Gloria was just getting started.

She announced that she'd thought adoption was "just another phase." Then she complained that I'd pushed for two children who weren't even related.

"Gloria, that's enough."

She didn't stop.

Gloria shrugged.

"We just think it's…

risky.

All those trauma stories.

And honestly, it's different when they're not your bl**d."

"You need to leave."

Gloria raised her eyebrows.

Then she turned toward my children.

"These children...

are my fake grandchildren.

I'm not leaving them a dime.

My son has been manipulated.

And I won't pretend otherwise."

I was furious.

Then she looked straight at me.

"So sensitive.

Maybe if Hannah had her own children, she wouldn't be so desperate to fake it."

Andrew stepped in just in time to hear the end.

"I only heard the last few things you said, Mom.

But I think they were enough to make one thing very clear — Hannah's right.

You need to leave.

Now."

Gloria left.

And for months, we didn't hear from her.

But apparently, everyone else had heard what happened.

One day, Andrew's cousin told me Gloria had tried to defend herself by saying she was "just being honest."

It didn't help.

Slowly, even the people around her started pulling away.

Meanwhile, Amara and Liam finally started calling me Mom.

I thought Gloria was out of our lives for good.

Then Christmas morning came.

We were home in our pajamas, baking cinnamon rolls, when someone knocked.

I opened the door.

Gloria was standing there.

She was holding a single red envelope.

"I just…

I needed to tell someone."

A long pause.

"I don't know if it was your idea..."

I stared at her.

What was inside that red envelope — and what did Gloria need to say after all these months?
