Chapter 6: The Deal Behind the Door

The handle moved.

Grace locked the door and pressed a button beneath her desk.

“Linda,” Mark called from the hallway, “open the door.”

“No.”

“I came to fix this.”

Grace pointed toward the recording timer.

It was still running.

“Then explain your offer,” I said loudly.

“The bank made a mistake.

We can correct it privately.”

“You offered to return half of money that belongs to me.”

“Our money.”

“You transferred it without telling me.”

His palm struck the door.

“Because Harrison was preparing to freeze it.”

Mr.

Harrison stepped closer.

“How did you know that?”

Silence followed.

Grace’s eyes met mine.

“You still have access to someone inside the company,” Mr.

Harrison said.

Mark tried the handle again.

“Linda, Harrison will abandon you the moment this becomes inconvenient.

Open the door.”

Susan stood beside me.

“Tell him I’m staying.”

“You heard her,” I said.

Mark’s voice hardened.

“If she stays, she answers for every document she signed.”

Susan unlocked her phone.

“I photographed the last papers before I gave them back.”

I looked at her.

“You did?”

“I became frightened when he mentioned the house.”

She pulled up four photographs.

Each page carried a notary seal with the number 48317.

Grace examined them.

“That seal can be traced.”

“It belongs to a notary named Peter Lang,” Susan said.

“But he wasn’t there.

Mark stamped the pages himself.”

Mr.

Harrison took the phone.

“That connects him directly to the false loan.”

Mark heard him through the door.

“Susan, delete those photographs.

I’ll forget the five thousand dollars.”

“No.”

“I’ll tell the lender you planned all of it.”

Susan’s shoulders trembled, but she moved closer to the door.

“You told me Linda had become confused since the children left.”

I closed my eyes.

Susan continued.

“You said she forgot conversations and needed you to handle her decisions.”

Mark said nothing.

“Did you tell the bank that too?” I asked.

“It would have been kinder than telling them the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That our marriage has been over for years.”

The room became painfully still.

“You came home every night,” I said.

“To a clean house and a warm dinner.

Don’t mistake convenience for love.”

My legs folded beneath me.

Susan caught me before I reached the floor and lowered me into a chair.

“Look at me,” she said.

I couldn’t.

“Linda, look at me.”

I lifted my head.

Tears were running down Susan’s face.

“He said that to break you because the papers didn’t work.”

“I gave him twenty-eight years.”

“And he still needed your name, your house, and your good reputation to build his lie.”

Grace came around the desk and knelt beside us.

“My former husband emptied our account when I was thirty-nine,” she said.

“I believed losing the money was the worst part.”

“What was?”

“Learning he had mistaken my trust for weakness.”

She placed a folder in my lap.

“I became a banking investigator because someone helped me prove the difference.

Let me do that for you.”

A security officer’s voice sounded outside.

“Mr.

Carter, step away from the door.”

Mark raised his voice.

“This is a family discussion.”

Grace unlocked the door.

Two security officers stood beside Mark.

I rose and faced him.

“You said our marriage was over.

Good.

Then you no longer get to speak for me.”

His jaw tightened.

“If I leave, the deal leaves with me.”

“There is no deal.”

“You’ll lose the house.”

“Then I’ll clean every house in this county before I sign your lie.”

One officer guided him toward the lobby.

Mark twisted around.

“You’ll regret choosing strangers over your husband.”

Susan opened the office door wider.

“She chose the people who told her the truth.”

Mark was escorted through the bank.

Grace watched until the outer doors closed.

Mr.

Harrison’s phone rang.

“Caleb?”

The voice on the other end sounded strained.

“We restored the backups, sir, but Mark wasn’t working alone.”

“Who helped him?”

“There were twelve approvals from Elise Grant’s account.”

Mr.

Harrison looked at me.

May you like

Caleb continued.

“And she just boarded a flight using a ticket purchased from Linda’s hidden account.”
