Chapter 1: The Knock at Nine

My husband mocked my part-time cleaning job in front of his friends — then his boss knocked on our door.
I began cleaning houses part-time after our youngest left for college.
It wasn't glamorous, but I enjoyed the work, and the extra money was mine.
My husband, Mark, didn't take it seriously.
He worked as a senior manager at a major construction company and earned far more than I did.
Last Saturday, three of his coworkers joined us for dinner.
Someone asked what I'd been doing lately.
Before I could answer, Mark laughed.
"She's a cleaning lady now."
Everyone chuckled.
Then he added, "Meanwhile, some of us have actual jobs."
I felt my face grow hot.
"I work too."
Mark smiled.
"Three mornings a week, Linda.
Let's not pretend it's the same thing."
I didn't argue.
I quietly cleared the plates.
Twenty minutes later, someone knocked on the front door.
Mark looked puzzled.
It was nearly nine.
When I opened it, a man in an elegant coat was standing on our porch.
I recognized him at once.
I'd seen his photograph on Mark's company website.
It was his boss, Mr.
Harrison.
Mark sprang up.
"Sir?
What are you doing here?"
Mr.
Harrison barely looked at him.
He looked at me.
"Linda, I'm sorry to come this late, but I need an answer tonight."
The room went silent.
Mark looked back and forth between us.
"You two know each other?"
Mr.
Harrison nodded.
"Your wife has been helping me for months."
Mark laughed awkwardly.
"Cleaning your house?"
Mr.
Harrison's expression didn't change.
"Among other things."
Then he handed me a heavy folder.
Mark stood.
"What is that?"
I didn't answer.
That morning, I'd made a decision.
For months, Mark had treated my job like something embarrassing.
What he didn't know was that one of the homes I cleaned belonged to Mr.
Harrison — and things I'd seen there had led to conversations Mark knew nothing about.
I set the folder on the dining table.
Mark reached for it.
I put my hand over the cover.
"No.
You wanted your friends to hear how unimportant my job is.
They can stay for this too."
His smile disappeared.
Mr.
Harrison pulled out a chair.
Then he looked directly at my husband.
His next question made me go pale.
What will Mr.
May you like
Harrison reveal about Mark?
