Chapter 2: My Name on the Invoices

“Mark, why has your department paid more than eighty thousand dollars to a cleaning company registered in Linda’s name?”

My knees nearly gave way.

“What company?” I whispered.

Mark’s face tightened.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Mr.

Harrison opened the folder and placed several invoices on the table.

Each one carried my name and what looked like my signature.

“I’ve never seen these,” I said.

“I don’t even own a company.”

One of Mark’s coworkers leaned closer.

“Mark, you told accounting Linda approved every payment.”

Mark shot him a furious look.

“Stay out of this.”

Mr.

Harrison turned to me.

“That’s why I asked you to examine the documents I found at my house.

I needed to know whether these signatures were yours.”

“They aren’t.”

The room fell silent again.

Mark reached for the papers, but Mr.

Harrison pulled them away.

“You said this was Linda’s private business,” he told Mark.

“You also said she begged you not to tell anyone.”

“I can explain.”

Before he could continue, my phone lit up on the table.

It was a message from an unknown number—with a photograph of Mark handing an envelope to someone I recognized.

Mark saw it too.

“Linda,” he said sharply, “don’t open that message.”
