Chapter 2: The Message She Was Never Meant to See

David took the package out of Richard's hand.

Not roughly.

Not with a scene.

He just reached over, lifted it out of Richard's grip, and walked it back to the bathroom.

The room went completely silent.

When David came back, he didn't sit down.

He stood in the middle of the room and looked at Richard.

"You have three newborns at home," he said.

"And that's what you do with your wife?"

Richard laughed nervously.

"Relax, man.

She knows I'm joking."

"Does she?"

David turned to me.

His voice was calm, but his jaw was tight.

"I'm sorry you had to stand there and take that."

I couldn't speak.

My throat had closed completely.

Then Richard's tone changed.

"Don't make this weird.

It's just guy talk."

"Guy talk." David repeated it slowly.

"My wife had the same condition after our son was born.

For eight months." He paused.

"I never once thought it was funny."

The other men stopped smiling.

Richard opened his mouth — then closed it.

But what none of them knew was what I had found that morning.

Before the guests arrived.

Before any of this happened.

A message on Richard's phone.

From a woman I didn't recognize.

And the message said: *"Does she still not know?"*
