Chapter 1: The Package He Held Like a Trophy

My husband mocked me in front of his buddies for wearing adult diapers after giving birth — until one of his friends stood up and did something no one at the table expected.
One year ago, I carried three babies at once.
The pregnancy severely weakened my pelvic floor.
Sometimes, if I coughed, sneezed, laughed too hard, or lifted something heavy, I could have an accident before I had time to stop it.
It wasn't something I chose, and it wasn't because I hadn't taken care of myself.
On difficult days, I wore discreet protective underwear.
Only my husband, Richard, knew about it, although he often joked about it.
Yesterday, Richard invited six friends over.
I made chili, filled bowls with chips, and set the drinks down beside the sofa.
As I carried the plates into the kitchen, I heard deafening laughter erupt from the living room.
Richard stood beside the television, holding the package I kept hidden beneath the bathroom towels.
"Look what I found," he announced.
"Our triplets can already hold it in, but apparently their mother still hasn't finished potty training."
Richard shook the package like a trophy.
"Careful, gentlemen.
Don't make her laugh too hard, or we'll need to cover the couch."
My face burned.
"Please put that away," I whispered.
Richard rolled his eyes.
"Oh, relax.
It's just a joke.
If you're embarrassed, maybe you should have sorted yourself out by now."
He made another joke, but by then, I could no longer make out the words.
That was when his oldest friend, David, set his beer down on the table.
He hadn't laughed once.
He looked at the package in Richard's hand, then at me — and something in his expression shifted.
Then David pushed back his chair…
walked straight up to Richard…
and did something nobody in that room saw coming.
I gasped in shock.
---
What did David do — and will Richard ever face what he's done to her?
