Chapter 2: The Name at the Bottom

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the letter.
My oldest, Daniel, put his hand on my shoulder.
"Mom?
What is it?"
I couldn't answer him.
I couldn't speak at all.
Because Robert's first line said:
"I never stopped loving you.
But I had no choice.
They gave me no choice."
I read it again.
And again.
Then the next paragraph made my stomach drop.
Robert hadn't left because he wanted to.
He'd left because someone had threatened him — threatened the children — and told him that if he stayed, none of them would be safe.
He'd walked away to protect us.
For thirty years, he'd been living with that secret.
Watching from a distance.
Making sure we were okay.
There was a photograph tucked behind the letter.
It was a picture of my front porch.
Taken recently.
Maybe within the last year.
He had been watching us.
Daniel took one look at my face and grabbed the letter from my hands.
He read it in silence.
Then he looked up, and I saw something shift in his eyes — something between grief and fury.
"Mom," he said quietly.
"There's a name at the bottom.
Someone he says you need to find."
I looked down at the letter again.
The name written there stopped my breath completely.
It was someone I already knew.

What that name revealed tore everything apart.
