Chapter 1: The Envelope at the Door

My fiancé left me alone with his 10 children a week before our wedding — 30 years later, his lawyer showed up at my door and said: "I was instructed to give you this envelope on this very day.

Those were his explicit instructions before he passed."

When I met Robert, he was five years older than me — kind, caring, funny, and the father of ten young children.

His wife had passed away, and he'd been raising them on his own.

We started planning our wedding, and I couldn't wait for that day.

But a week before the wedding, Robert disappeared.

I panicked.

I called everyone I could think of and was even about to call the police when I noticed a note on the kitchen table.

It said:

"I can't live like this anymore.

I'm sorry.

Don't look for me."

He'd abandoned me and all ten of his children.

I had no idea what to do next.

I was heartbroken.

My relatives told me to let the children go into foster care and move on with my life.

But how could I send them away when I'd already come to love them as my own?

So I adopted all ten of them.

I worked nonstop to provide for all of us.

My parents were furious with me over my decision and refused to help.

I never dated anyone again.

And honestly, men usually stepped back the moment they found out how many children I had.

But I was still happy because I had them.

Thirty years passed.

Every weekend, we gather at my house just to talk over a cup of tea and enjoy good food together.

Last weekend, while we were all seated together again, there was a knock at the door.

I opened it and saw a man I'd never met before.

He said he was Robert's lawyer.

Then he handed me an envelope and said:

"Ma'am, I was instructed to give you this envelope on this very day.

Those were his explicit instructions before he passed."

The lawyer left before I could ask a single question.

I had no idea what was going on, but curiosity got the better of me.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter from Robert.

I instantly felt sick because I realized what had actually happened 30 years ago.

What was in that letter — and what did Robert do 30 years ago?
