Chapter 2: What She Said She Knew

**— PART 2 —**
Inside the box was a tent.
The exact same model Gabrielle had set up in the backyard.
Luke's voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
"Since you love tents so much, I thought you'd want your own."
Gabrielle's face went white.
Then red.
She started to say something, but Luke cut her off.
"I called the painters, Gabrielle.
There were no painters.
There was no renovation.
I checked the guest room myself — the bed was made, the windows were open, everything was ready."
The children had gone quiet in the hallway.
My youngest grandchild was peeking around the corner, watching.
Gabrielle straightened up.
"She's always coming between us.
Every time she visits, you drop everything for her.
I'm your WIFE."
Luke didn't raise his voice.
"She's my mother.
She slept on the ground with a bad back because you lied to her face."
Then Gabrielle said something I never expected.
She looked straight at me and said, "You have no idea what I know about you."
The room went completely still.
Luke turned slowly toward her.
"What did you just say?"
Gabrielle smiled — and it wasn't a kind smile.
"Ask her, Luke.
Ask her what she's been hiding from you all these years."
