Chapter 1: The Tent in the Backyard
My DIL made me sleep in a tent in her backyard while my son was away on a business trip — but she didn't expect him to come home early.
My daughter-in-law, Gabrielle, hates me, and she's never tried to hide it.
The thing is, I live in another city and have some health problems, so sometimes my son, Luke, comes to visit me and help around the house.
It really bothers her that Luke spends so much time with me.
Gabrielle loves being the center of attention and can't stand it when she isn't.
Recently, Luke invited me to stay with them so I could see my grandchildren.
I'd missed them terribly.
But right before I was supposed to fly to their city, Luke was suddenly called away on a business trip.
It was only supposed to be for two or three days.
When I arrived at their house, it was already late, so I asked her to show me the room where I'd be sleeping.
And Gabrielle led me into the backyard and pointed at a TENT.
I thought she was joking.
But Gabrielle said:
"The thing is, all the rooms were painted just this morning.
There's only one room left that hasn't been painted yet, and I'll be sleeping there with the kids.
There's NOWHERE to sleep inside the house, but you like camping, if I remember correctly, right?"
Well, I wouldn't exactly say I like it.
I have a bad back, and the last time I went camping was about 10 years ago.
But what could I do?
Obviously, I didn't want to breathe in paint fumes.
So I crawled into a sleeping bag and SLEPT IN THE TENT.
In the morning, I woke up with terrible back pain, and Gabrielle still wouldn't let me inside the house.
So I just sat there waiting for her to bring me breakfast.
Then suddenly, Luke's car pulled up.
We hugged, and he told me his business trip had ended early, so he'd driven straight home.
Then he noticed the tent and asked what it was doing there.
I replied:
"Uh, honey, you're having the rooms renovated, so Gabrielle had me sleep out here."
Luke turned red as a tomato.
He said there was NO renovation and that he had PERSONALLY prepared the guest room for me.
I was shocked.
Gabrielle had really gone too far.
Luke smiled and said he was going to run to the store for 20 or 30 minutes, then come back.
When he returned carrying a MYSTERIOUS BOX and handed it to Gabrielle, she screamed so loudly that the whole house seemed to shake.
You'd never believe WHAT Luke had put in that box.
