Chapter 2: The Envelope

I stared at my husband.

We had been married for less than four hours.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

He looked down the hallway, then back at me.

His voice was low and careful.

"I overheard two of your uncles talking near the bar.

They said your dad lost the company six months ago.

That the house is mortgaged.

That everything is gone."

My chest tightened.

"That's not true.

He told me it was a test."

"A test." He repeated it slowly.

Like he was deciding whether to believe me.

"He wanted to see how you'd react," I said.

"He was never actually broke."

My husband was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said, "I hope you're right."

Something in his voice made my stomach drop.

I pulled out my phone and called my dad.

It rang four times.

Five.

No answer.

I looked back at my husband.

He was watching me with an expression I had never seen on his face before.

"There's something else," he said quietly.

"Your aunt came to me before the ceremony.

She gave me an envelope.

She said I should open it after we were married."

He reached into his jacket.

"I think you need to see what's inside."
