Chapter 1: The Man in the Wrinkled Suit

My dad came to my wedding in a wrinkled suit and pretended he couldn't afford a gift — I was furious until my new husband pulled me aside and asked, "Did he really lose everything?"

A week before my wedding, my dad asked me to come by his office.

He had built his business from nothing and always worried that people treated me differently because they knew our family had money.

"I want to test him," he said.

I groaned.

"Dad, no."

"For one day, I'm going to act like the business collapsed.

No expensive suit.

No big gift.

I want to see how he reacts when he thinks there's nothing to gain."

I told him it was ridiculous.

My fiancé loved me.

He had never asked about my inheritance, my dad's company, or what anything cost.

"He's not marrying me for money," I said.

Dad only nodded.

"Then this won't matter."

On the wedding day, he committed to the act.

He arrived in an old wrinkled suit and quietly told a few relatives that the business had gone under.

When it was time for gifts, he hugged me and said, "I'm sorry, sweetheart.

I couldn't afford anything this year."

I knew it was fake.

But standing there in front of everyone, I still felt embarrassed and angry that he had chosen my wedding for this little experiment.

My husband didn't react much at the time.

He simply thanked my dad for coming and stepped back to the reception.

Later, while everyone was dancing, he touched my arm.

"Can we talk somewhere private?"

We slipped into the hallway.

"Did he really lose everything?"

His next words stunned me to my core.
