Chapter 8: The Morning Everything Moved

Paul's colleague was named Sasha Reeves.

She had an office on the fourteenth floor of a building downtown, a desk with nothing on it except a legal pad and a pen, and the kind of stillness that made you want to say everything accurately.

Vanessa came.

She drove four hours and arrived ten minutes early.

When I opened the door to the waiting room and saw her — a woman I'd only known as a voice and a photo on a stranger's phone — she stood up and we looked at each other for a moment without speaking.

"Thank you for coming," I said.

"I should have done this years ago," she said.

We sat across from Sasha together.

Derek was on speaker from his car, parked outside.

He'd brought photographs of the documents he'd kept — scanned copies, organized by date, going back five years.

Sasha listened without interrupting.

She wrote three things on her legal pad in the first twenty minutes.

At the end of an hour, she set her pen down.

"What you're describing," she said, "is a pattern of financial fraud conducted across multiple relationships over a sustained period.

The forged signatures, if we can establish them through forensic document analysis, constitute a separate crjminal exposure.

The shell company structure is consistent with deliberate asset concealment." She looked at me.

"The phone call during the proposal — if he made representations about financial security while simultaneously transferring joint funds — that's inducement.

That's actionable."

"What does actionable mean in terms of timeline?" Paul asked.

"We move to freeze the Threshold accounts today.

I'll file for an emergency injunction this afternoon.

If the court grants it — and given what we have, I believe they will — Myles will not be able to move another dollar before he knows we're coming." She paused.

"He will know by end of day.

There's no way around that."

"What will he do when he finds out?" I asked.

Sasha looked at me directly.

"He'll call you.

He'll have a new explanation.

He may become angry.

He may try to negotiate." She folded her hands on the desk.

"Do not speak to him without counsel present from this point forward.

If he calls, you say: 'My attorney has advised me not to discuss this.' Nothing else."

I nodded.

"There's one more thing," Derek said through the speaker.

"Claire Morrow.

She's not just a co-director on paper.

She knows what he's doing.

She's been part of it."

"Do you have anything connecting her directly to the transfers?" Sasha asked.

"I have emails.

From Vanessa's case.

He used a shared account to communicate with Claire about moving funds.

I have twelve of them."

Sasha picked up her pen.

"Send them to me within the hour."

"Already done," Derek said.

"I sent them to Paul last night."

Paul opened his laptop.

"Confirmed.

I have them."

Sasha wrote a fourth thing on her legal pad.

Then she looked up at Vanessa.

"I know this has been a long time coming," she said.

"What he did to you — the forged documents, the coercion — we can include that in the pattern evidence.

It strengthens the case significantly.

But it also means your name will be part of this."

Vanessa was quiet for a moment.

"Good," she said.

"I've been invisible long enough."

By two o'clock that afternoon, the injunction had been filed.

By four, it was granted.

At 4:23, my phone rang.

Myles.

I let it ring.

At 4:31, he called again.

I picked up.

"My attorney has advised me not to discuss this," I said.

A long silence.

"What have you done?" His voice was different.

The warmth was completely gone.

"Goodbye, Myles," I said.

I ended the call.

Set the phone on the desk in Sasha's office, where I was still sitting.

Sasha looked at the phone.

Then at me.

"That's the last easy conversation you'll have with him."

"I know," I said.

"Are you ready for what comes next?"

I thought about the billboard.

The ring.

The coffee he'd brought to my table that morning, my order exactly right.

May you like

Six years of a life I thought I understood.

"Yes," I said.
