Chapter 1: The Billboard That Changed Everything

My boyfriend turned an entire billboard into the sweetest marriage proposal — by morning, someone had written across it, "Before you say yes, there's something you need to know."
My boyfriend, Myles, and I had been together for six years, and we'd built a life we both loved.
We supported each other's careers, traveled together, and could still make each other laugh even after the worst days.
We'd talked about marriage, but agreed that we wanted to be fully on our feet first.
Lately, though, Myles had been acting strangely.
He seemed exhausted and secretive, but whenever I asked, he assured me everything was fine.
Then, one afternoon, he called.
"I have something special planned tonight.
Meet me at our favorite restaurant at seven, dress up, and call me when you leave.
Keep me on speaker during the drive, okay?"
I was pleasantly surprised and had no idea what was coming.
That evening, I did exactly as he asked.
As we talked, a huge illuminated billboard came into view ahead, displaying our photo and four enormous words:
"Will you marry me?"
I burst into tears.
"So, honey...
will you marry me?"
"Yes!
Of course!"
"Then hurry," he laughed.
"Your fiancé is waiting."
The evening was everything I'd ever wanted.
We celebrated, talked about our future, and I couldn't stop staring at my ring.
The next morning, still floating from the night before, I took the same route just to see the billboard again.
But my smile disappeared.
Someone had written across it in huge red letters:
"Before you say yes, there's something you need to know."
All day, I couldn't sit still, wondering whether it was a cruel joke or a genuine warning.
That evening, I got home before Myles.
When someone knocked on the door, I wondered how he'd gotten home so quickly.
But when I opened it, I found a man in a cap standing there, nervously glancing behind him.
"Myles can't know I spoke to you," he whispered.
Then he leaned closer.
"You got my message, right?
Please tell me you haven't said yes yet.
We need to talk."
