The pool area went quiet.
I looked out at my coworkers — some confused, some nervous — and I kept my voice steady.
"I want to thank Greg," I said.
"For twelve years of motivation."
A few people laughed, unsure if it was a joke.
Greg crossed his arms and smiled like he was still in control.
Then I reached into my bag and pulled out a folder.
"I've spent the last two weeks putting this together," I said.
"Performance reports.
Project logs.
And a few emails I think HR would find very interesting."
The smile left Greg's face.
"Linda—" he started.
"I'm not finished," I said quietly.
I looked at him directly for the first time in years.
"You scheduled this retreat at a water park on purpose.
You told three people on this team that I wouldn't come.
You said — and I'm quoting — that some people should just know their place."
The silence was complete.
One of my coworkers, Diane, put her hand over her mouth.
Greg took one step toward the platform.
And that's when my phone buzzed.
I looked down at the screen.
It was a message from someone I hadn't heard from in four years — someone who had left the company quietly, without explanation.
The message said only four words.
