Chapter 1: The Retreat He Never Expected Her to Attend
My boss scheduled our company retreat at a water park, certain I'd be too ashamed to show up — but he never expected what I did instead.
I'd worked under Greg for twelve years, fixing reports no one else wanted to touch.
And in all that time, I'd learned something about him.
Greg never made a cruel joke unless there was an audience.
He was my boss, and during team meetings, he loved slipping in little comments meant to embarrass me without sounding openly insulting.
Then, during our latest briefing, he leaned back in his chair with that familiar smirk.
"Linda," Greg said.
"You're coming to the retreat this year, right?
It's a water park this time.
Mandatory attendance.
Real team players don't hide."
Several coworkers immediately looked down at the table.
Everyone knew what he meant.
Greg had spent years making sarcastic remarks about my appearance, my pace, and how certain people just "aren't built for summer events."
He always made sure the comments were subtle enough to deny what he was doing.
For the next two weeks, I seriously considered staying home.
The thought of giving Greg another chance to humiliate me in front of everyone made me dread the retreat.
On the morning of the event, I drove to the water park and sat in my car until my coffee went cold.
I knew Greg was expecting me not to come.
And if I stayed there, I'd be giving him exactly what he wanted.
So I stepped out.
When I walked through the gates, Greg was standing near the main lockers with half the team gathered around him.
The moment he saw me, his eyebrows shot up.
"Well," he said loudly, making sure everyone heard.
"I'll admit it, Linda.
I didn't think you'd actually show up today."
A few coworkers gave nervous, uncomfortable laughs.
I didn't respond.
Instead, I calmly walked over to the small platform near the pool, picked up the microphone, and asked everyone for their attention.
What happened next made sure Greg could never look me in the eye again.
