Chapter 2: She Said She Was Helping

The officer arrived within twenty minutes.
Ben sat beside me on the nursery floor, still trembling.
He kept his eyes on Brenda's crib the whole time.
"Son, can you tell me what you saw?" the officer asked gently.
Ben looked at me first.
I nodded.
"She covers her face," he whispered.
"With the blanket.
When Mom and Dad are sleeping."
The officer went very still.
"How many times did you see this?"
"Three times." Ben's voice broke.
"The first time I thought it was an accident.
But then she did it again.
And she looked at me after.
She said if I told anyone, they'd send Brenda away because nobody really wants a baby like her."
I couldn't breathe.
My MIL had been in the guest room the whole time.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
Then we heard her footsteps in the hallway.
She appeared in the nursery doorway, saw the officer, and her face changed.
"What is this?" she said.
"Whatever that boy told you — he's a child.
He doesn't understand what he saw."
"Ma'am—" the officer began.
"She's not normal." My MIL's voice dropped low.
"You know that.
I was helping."
Ben grabbed my arm.
"Mom," he whispered.
"She said that before.
The same words."

What my MIL said next made the officer reach for his radio.
