Chapter 1: The Boy Who Wouldn't Leave Her Side

My 7-year-old son began sleeping under his newborn sister's crib — when I overheard what he whispered to her at 2 A.M., I went pale.
My seven-year-old son, Ben, had wanted a sibling for years.
So when his baby sister, Brenda, was born, he was thrilled.
Brenda had Down syndrome, and while my husband and I needed time to process everything the doctors explained, Ben didn't care about diagnoses.
"She's perfect," he said when he first held her.
He helped pick her clothes, sang whenever she cried, and proudly showed everyone photos of "his baby."
But two weeks after we brought Brenda home, something changed.
Ben stopped sleeping in his room.
The first time I found him curled beneath Brenda's crib with his pillow and blanket, I almost laughed.
"Sweetheart, you have your own bed."
"I know.
I just want to sleep here."
I assumed he was simply a protective big brother.
Then it happened again.
And again.
No matter how often I carried him back to bed, I'd find him beneath the crib the next morning.
My MIL had been staying with us since Brenda's birth, and she thought Ben was jealous.
"Stop allowing this nonsense," she told me.
"He needs to learn that the baby isn't the center of everything."
But something still bothered me.
Whenever my MIL offered to watch Brenda while I showered or rested, Ben immediately appeared in the nursery.
Once, my MIL reached for Brenda, and Ben stepped right between them.
"Ben!" I scolded.
He refused to explain.
Then, at 2 a.m.
last Thursday, whispering through the baby monitor woke me.
I quietly headed toward the nursery.
Ben was lying beneath the crib, gripping one of its bars.
"It's okay, Brenda," he whispered.
I froze in the doorway.
"I won't fall asleep this time."
My bl00d went cold.
Then he said,
"I won't let Grandma do it again."
"Ben?"
He jumped.
I rushed in and knelt beside him.
"Sweetheart, what does Grandma do?"
His eyes filled with tears.
"I promised not to tell."
"Tell me what?"
He looked up at his sleeping sister.
"What Grandma does to Brenda when you and Dad aren't looking."
My hands began shaking.
"What did you see?"
Ben covered his face.
Then he told me everything, crying.
My hands trembling, I called the police.
