Chapter 2: One Word on the Screen

It was a phone.
Not a medical form.
Not a chart.
A phone — and my MIL's hand closed around it so fast, like she'd been waiting for it.
"What is that?" I managed between contractions.
"Why is she giving you a phone?"
My MIL smiled.
That calm, practiced smile I hadn't seen in months.
"Don't worry about it, sweetheart.
Just breathe."
But I couldn't stop staring.
The nurse had already turned and walked out without a single word to me.
No introduction.
No chart check.
Nothing.
"Whose phone is that?" My voice came out sharper than I intended.
My MIL slipped it into her handbag.
"It's nothing.
Focus on the baby."
That's when I noticed her fingers were trembling.
She pulled her chair closer to my bed and reached for my hand, but I pulled back.
My mind was racing faster than the contractions now.
That nurse knew her.
They had planned this.
Whatever was on that phone — someone had sent it here deliberately, timed for exactly this moment.
Then my MIL's own phone buzzed on the bedside tray.
She flipped it face-down before I could see the screen.
But I caught one word of the notification before it disappeared.
Chris.

What did Chris send to that nurse — and why didn't he want me to see it?
