Chapter 1: The Nurse Walked Past Me

I went into labor early while my husband was at work, so my MIL rushed me to the hospital — but when the delivery nurse stepped into my room, the item she quietly handed to my MIL made my stomach completely drop.

My husband, Chris, and I have been married for four years.

For the first three, his mother was incredibly cold and highly critical of everything I did.

She made no secret of the fact that she thought Chris could do better.

But the exact moment we announced I was pregnant, a switch flipped.

Suddenly, she was the perfect, doting mother-in-law.

She cooked for us, bought expensive nursery furniture, and checked on me constantly.

I just assumed she was thrilled to finally be a grandmother, so I let my guard down and welcomed her into our lives.

Yesterday, Chris drove out to a job site a few hours away.

I was only 34 weeks pregnant, so we didn't think twice about him leaving.

But just after lunch, my water unexpectedly broke.

Panicked and experiencing intense contractions, I realized Chris wouldn't make it back in time.

With no other options, I called my MIL.

She arrived in record time and was surprisingly calm.

She smoothly navigated the heavy traffic, got me straight to the maternity ward, handled all the front desk paperwork while I breathed through the pain, and stayed right by my side as they wheeled me into a private delivery room.

I was lying in the hospital bed, hooked up to the fetal monitors, desperately waiting for the doctor.

A few minutes later, the door opened, and a delivery nurse walked in.

I fully expected her to check my chart or introduce herself to me, the terrified patient.

Instead, she walked right past my bed.

She stopped directly in front of my MIL and gave her a silent, knowing nod.

The nurse reached into her scrub pocket.

And as I watched what she pulled out and quietly handed directly to my MIL, my stomach completely dropped.

What did that nurse just hand her — and why did she go straight to my MIL instead of me?
