Chapter 5: The Message from the Unknown Number

I stood in the elevator until the doors began to close again.
I stepped out just in time.
The corridor was empty.
Soft lighting.
The sound of the ocean somewhere below.
I read the message again.
*You should ask Michael what he knew before the airport.
And when he knew it.*
No name.
No contact saved.
A number I had never seen.
I typed back: *Who is this?*
Three dots appeared.
Then stopped.
Then appeared again.
*Someone who thinks you deserve the full picture.*
I walked slowly to my room.
I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the message for a long time.
Michael had watched me enter my credit card information.
He had received every confirmation.
He had stood at that boarding gate and said nothing while Vanessa told strangers I hadn't paid for the trip.
I had told myself it was weakness.
That he was afraid of her.
That the silence was cowardice, not conspiracy.
But what if he had known something before we even left Denver?
I called the number.
It rang four times.
Then a woman's voice.
"I wasn't sure you'd call."
"Who are you?"
A pause.
"My name is Dana."
Vanessa's sister.
I sat very still.
"Why are you texting me?" I asked.
"Because I've been watching this for two years and I'm tired of it." Her voice was steady.
Not angry.
Resigned.
"Vanessa borrowed money from me.
You probably know that now.
But there's more to it than the amount."
"Tell me."
"She told me the money was for a medical bill.
Michael's.
She said he had a procedure he was embarrassed about and they didn't want to put it through insurance.
I gave her the money without asking questions because she's my sister and I trusted her."
I didn't speak.
"Three months later she asked for more.
Same reason.
Different procedure.
I gave it again." Dana's voice tightened slightly.
"Then last month I ran into Michael's colleague at a work event.
We got talking.
I mentioned I hoped Michael was recovering well.
The man had no idea what I was talking about."
"There was no procedure," I said.
"No.
There wasn't."
I stood up and walked to the window.
The ocean was dark now.
Just sound.
"Does Michael know she used his name to get the money from you?"
"That's what I don't know," Dana said.
"And that's what I need to know.
Because if he did, then they both lied to me.
And if he didn't, then his wife has been using him as a prop without his knowledge."
"Why come to me?"
"Because you're the only person in this situation with nothing to hide." A short pause.
"And because she said something to me once, about you.
She said that if you ever found out how much she'd borrowed, you'd use it to take Michael away from her."
The words settled over me like something cold.
"She's afraid of you," Dana said.
"Not because you've done anything wrong.
Because she knows you see her clearly."
I thought about Vanessa's face at the transfer desk.
The panic behind her eyes.
The way she had angled her phone away from me in the lobby.
"She's going to try to control the story," I said.
"Whatever happens next, she'll find a way to make me the villain."
"Yes," Dana said simply.
"That's why I'm calling you now.
Before she gets the chance."
I asked Dana to send me whatever documentation she had.
The loan amounts.
The dates.
The messages where Vanessa had mentioned Michael's name.
Dana said she would.
We hung up.
I sat in the dark room for a moment.
The ceiling fan turned slowly overhead.
Then I heard footsteps in the corridor outside my door.
They stopped.
A long pause.
Then a soft knock.
"Carol." Vanessa's voice.
Low.
Careful.
"I know you're in there.
May you like
We need to talk.
Just the two of us."
