Chapter 2: The Account That Was Supposed to Have Money in It

**— PART 2 —**
I looked at Michael calmly.
"I didn't do anything," I said.
"I just stopped paying for a trip I apparently never paid for."
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The transfer employee glanced between us, clearly wishing he were somewhere else.
"There must be another card on file," Vanessa said, her voice dropping.
"Check again."
"Ma'am, the reservation is fully flagged.
Without a new payment method, we cannot proceed."
Michael stepped toward me.
His voice was low, almost pleading.
"Mom.
Please.
Just put the card back.
We'll talk about this later."
"Talk about what, Michael?
About how your wife told a group of strangers I hadn't paid a dime?
In front of me?"
He flinched.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"Don't let her do this to us.
It's our anniversary."
I looked at her.
"Then pay for it."
The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
Vanessa opened her bag.
I watched her face change as she checked her phone.
Something shifted behind her eyes — not just anger.
Something closer to panic.
She turned away and made a call.
Her voice was too quiet to hear clearly.
But I caught one sentence.
*"I need you to tell me the account still has money in it."*
Michael heard it too.
He slowly turned toward her.
