Chapter 2: Please Keep Her Safe

The note had four words at the top.
*Please keep her safe.*
My legs gave out.
I sat down right there on the kitchen floor, the baby in my arms, the note shaking in my hand.
The handwriting was Jennifer's.
I would know it anywhere.
She was alive.
She had to be.
You don't leave a note if you're g0ne.
I read the rest through tears I couldn't stop.
*Mom, I can't explain everything yet.
I'm not safe enough.
She's yours.
She's mine.
Please don't call the police.
Not yet.
I'll find a way back to you.
I promise.*
That was all.
No address.
No phone number.
No name for the baby.
I held that little girl so tight she made a small sound against my chest.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
My heart stopped.
I answered without thinking.
Silence.
Then breathing.
Then a voice — quiet, frightened, barely above a whisper.
"Mom?"
I couldn't speak.
I couldn't breathe.
"Mom, don't say my name out loud.
Please.
Someone may be watching the house."
