Chapter 1: The Jacket I Never Forgot
I found a baby wrapped in my missing daughter's denim jacket on my porch — the chilling note I pulled from the pocket made my hands start trembling.
My daughter, Jennifer, disappeared five years ago.
She was sixteen.
One day, she was part of our everyday life.
The next, she was simply gone.
The police searched everywhere.
Neighbors helped.
Her photo was shared online, mentioned on the radio, and printed on flyers all over town.
But nothing ever came of it.
No phone call.
No real lead.
No explanation.
After that, I barely knew how to keep going.
My husband blamed me.
He said I should have noticed something was wrong.
That I should have known.
Sometimes he even said it was my fault Jennifer had disappeared — or that she might be g0ne forever.
We never found out.
By the third year, our marriage had fallen apart too.
He left me for a woman he'd met at a bar and seemed to move on as if our whole life hadn't been destroyed.
For some reason, we're still legally married.
The house has been painfully quiet ever since Jennifer vanished.
She had been the light of it.
Then one morning, I opened my front door and froze.
There was a baby on my porch.
A tiny baby was lying inside a plastic shopping basket, the kind you'd see at a supermarket.
And she was wrapped in a denim jacket.
I recognized it immediately.
Jennifer's.
My knees almost gave out.
Without even thinking, I picked up the basket and carried the baby inside.
I could barely see through my tears.
She was so small and strangely quiet, staring at me with wide eyes.
I reached for the jacket with shaking fingers.
Then I started checking the pockets.
I don't even know what I expected to find.
Maybe proof that I wasn't imagining all of this.
Then my fingers touched a folded piece of paper.
I pulled it out.
Opened it.
And as I read the words written inside, my hands wouldn't stop shaking.
