Chapter 2: What She Was Carrying

⬇️ PART 2 ⬇️

His voice was barely a sound.

"That's your mother."

The room didn't move.

Nobody breathed.

I turned back to the woman in the blue dress — the woman I had found on the street, the woman I had asked to play a role for one day — and something inside me cracked open.

Her eyes were already filled with tears.

She hadn't said a word this whole time.

"Is it true?" I whispered.

"Are you—"

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then nodded — just once — so small I almost missed it.

My grandmother appeared from across the room.

The moment she saw the woman's face, she went completely still.

"How did she get in here?" Her voice was low.

Dangerous.

My grandfather turned to her slowly.

"You knew.

You knew this whole time where she was."

"Don't." My grandmother's jaw tightened.

"Don't you dare do this today."

"She's been on the streets, Margaret."

"She made her choice—"

"She was a child.

She had no choice."

Something passed between them — old, heavy, and full of things I had never been allowed to know.

I looked at the woman.

She was watching me with an expression I had no word for.

Then she reached into the small bag she was holding...

and slowly pulled something out.
