Chapter 1: The Woman With My Mother's Eyes
I asked a homeless woman to pretend to be my mother at my wedding — my grandfather saw her and turned pale.
I hadn't spoken to my mother in almost twenty years.
She disappeared when I was six.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
After that, my grandparents raised me.
Whenever I asked what had happened to her, they always gave me the same answer.
"Forget her.
She's gone."
But as my wedding drew closer, one thought wouldn't leave me alone.
Every bride seemed to have a mother beside her.
I had an empty chair.
The morning before the ceremony, I was walking downtown, trying to clear my head, when I noticed an older homeless woman seated outside a church.
Something about her eyes stopped me.
I couldn't explain it.
On impulse, I sat down beside her.
We ended up talking for nearly an hour.
She was funny.
Kind.
Gentle.
And before I walked away, I did something completely irrational.
I offered her a shower, a makeover, a beautiful dress...
and one strange favor.
"Would you pretend to be my mother for one day?"
She stared at me for a long moment.
Then she quietly nodded.
The next afternoon, she stepped into the wedding venue looking like a completely different woman.
No one recognized her.
Everyone simply assumed she was some distant relative.
Everything was going perfectly...
until my grandfather arrived.
The second he saw her...
the color drained from his face.
His hands began shaking.
The gift he was carrying slipped from his hands.
Then he slowly walked toward her.
The woman looked up.
For several seconds...
neither of them said a word.
My grandfather grabbed the nearest chair to keep himself from falling.
I hurried toward him.
"Grandpa...
what's wrong?"
But he couldn't take his eyes off the woman.
Finally, tears streaming down his face, he turned toward me...
and whispered words that made the entire room go silent.
