Chapter 6: The Child Who Kept a Copy

At Claire’s house, Daniel set the court order on the kitchen table.

His bank cards had already stopped working, and the hearing was three days away.

Claire pushed a mug toward him.

“You can stay here as long as you need.”

“I can’t even access my salary.”

“I didn’t ask whether you could pay me.”

Hannah stood in the doorway.

“Is this because of us?”

“No,” Daniel said.

“It is because Vanessa needs me frightened.”

“You were happier before I told you.”

Daniel’s chair scraped back.

“Hannah, look at me.”

She did, but her chin trembled.

“I would rather lose that house than leave you alone in it for one more night.”

“What if the judge believes her?”

“Then we tell the truth again.”

Hannah pressed the photograph of Eleanor against her chest.

“Adults always say that.

Then another adult brings papers, and the truth disappears.”

Daniel crossed the room but stopped an arm’s length away.

“You’re right.

I told you to trust Vanessa instead of asking why you were afraid.

I cannot undo that.”

Tears rolled down Hannah’s face.

“Then promise you’ll believe Ivy even if the videos are gone.”

“I believe both of you now.”

Hannah stepped forward.

Daniel held her while Claire wrapped an arm around them both.

Ivy joined them, pressing her face into Daniel’s shoulder.

A knock came at the front door.

Ruby stood outside with her father, Owen Blake, whom Daniel had met only twice.

“Vanessa told me Ruby was too upset to see me,” Owen said.

“Ruby called from the school office.”

Ruby held up an old phone with a cracked screen.

“Mom forgot this one was connected to her account.”

Daniel let them inside.

“What is on it?”

“The videos Ivy recorded.

I sent them to myself before Mom deleted them.”

Ivy stared at her.

“You saved them?”

Ruby nodded.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

“You’re a kid,” Hannah said.

“You spoke when you could.”

Owen placed a flash drive beside the court order.

“There’s more.

Ruby recorded Vanessa and Mark arguing last month.”

Ruby unlocked the phone.

Vanessa’s voice came through the speaker.

“Transfer it before Daniel gets home.”

Then Mark answered, “The trust needs two approvals.”

“Use the signature from the surgery papers.

Miriam Cole’s is online.”

Daniel looked at Owen.

“Have you heard this?”

“All seven minutes.”

In the recording, Mark demanded more money.

Vanessa promised him ten percent after the cabin sold.

Miriam arrived twenty minutes later and copied every file.

“This changes the hearing,” she said.

“But Vanessa will claim the children altered it.”

“She knows Ruby has the phone,” Owen said.

“She sent me six messages demanding it back.”

Daniel’s phone rang from an unknown number.

Miriam put it on speaker.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said, “we need to end this before all four children are dragged into court.”

“What are you offering?”

“Withdraw the bank complaint.

Say you approved the transfer, and I’ll release your accounts.”

“And the girls?”

“You can keep playing devoted father.

I’ll move out with Ruby and Caleb.”

Ruby covered her mouth.

Daniel looked directly at her.

“You mean you’ll punish your children for telling the truth.”

“I am trying to protect them from public humiliation.”

“You caused the humiliation.”

Vanessa’s voice hardened.

“If that recording appears in court, I will say Hannah coached Ruby because she hated me.

I will make every one of them testify.”

Hannah stepped toward the phone.

“You already taught me silence, Vanessa.

It didn’t work.”

The line remained quiet for several seconds.

Then Vanessa said, “You sound just like your mother.”

The call ended.

Miriam saved the recording.

“That was a mistake she cannot take back.”

Another call arrived before Daniel could answer.

The speaker identified himself as Thomas Reed, the notary whose seal appeared on the transfer.

“I need to speak before tomorrow’s hearing,” Thomas said.

“About Vanessa’s document?” Miriam asked.

“Yes.

I never notarized it.”

“Then who used your seal?”

May you like

Thomas took a breath.

“My former office manager—Mark Lewis.”
