Chapter 5: Eleanor’s Warning

“If you are hearing this,” Eleanor’s recording began, “I did not misjudge what I saw.”
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
Hannah reached for Ivy’s hand.
“Vanessa came to my hospital room twice when Daniel was away.
She asked when the girls would receive their inheritance and whether a new wife could control it.”
Miriam leaned closer to the recorder.
Eleanor continued.
“I told her the trust belonged to Hannah and Ivy.
She smiled and said children rarely know what is best for them.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
“She knew Vanessa before I did?”
Miriam nodded slowly.
“Vanessa volunteered with the hospital family-support office.
That may be where they met.”
Hannah stared at her father.
“She knew about Mom’s money before she met you.”
Daniel pressed play again.
“If Vanessa becomes part of my daughters’ lives, do not accuse her without proof.
Protect the girls first.
The original trust papers are in this box.
The annual statements should go directly to Daniel.”
Priya picked up the newest statement.
“These never went to you.
The mailing address was changed eighteen months ago.”
“To where?” Daniel asked.
“A post office box registered to VDL Property Services.”
Miriam removed another paper from the box.
“This agreement also requires two signatures for withdrawals over five thousand dollars.
Daniel’s and mine.”
“You never approved the transfer?”
“I did not.”
Priya reached for the office phone.
“Then the second authorization was fabricated.”
That afternoon, Daniel returned to the house with Claire and a civil standby officer to collect clothes and schoolbooks.
Vanessa waited in the dining room with her attorney, Grant Mercer.
“You brought an officer into our home?” she asked.
“I brought a witness.”
Grant raised a hand.
“No one needs to make this hostile.”
Vanessa pointed toward the stairs.
“Daniel has removed my children’s stepsisters, frozen household funds, and frightened Ruby into stealing private property.”
Ruby stepped out from behind Claire.
“I didn’t steal it.
You hid it.”
“You should be with your grandmother.”
“I asked to come.”
Vanessa looked at Claire.
“You are poisoning her against me.”
Claire placed a hand on Ruby’s shoulder.
“She came because she wanted to tell the truth.”
Daniel set a copy of Eleanor’s trust on the table.
“You changed the mailing address.
You used Mark’s company.
You submitted a second authorization Miriam never signed.”
Vanessa did not touch the document.
“Mark handled the paperwork.”
“Did Mark also hide Eleanor’s letter?”
“I found an old envelope in my kitchen.
That is not fraud.”
“You opened mail addressed to Hannah.”
“My house, my responsibility.”
Hannah came down the stairs carrying a framed photograph of Eleanor.
Vanessa’s eyes moved to it.
“That picture stays here.”
“It belonged to my mom.”
“I paid to have it framed.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Put it in your bag, Hannah.”
Vanessa reached for the frame, but Ruby stood between them.
“Let her have it.”
For one second, Vanessa stared at her daughter as if she were a stranger.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you.”
“You made me watch Hannah go hungry.”
“She was never hungry!”
“She asked me for bread after you went upstairs.”
Caleb appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Mom said we couldn’t give her any.”
Vanessa turned pale.
Grant closed his folder.
“I need to speak with my client privately.”
Daniel gathered the girls’ belongings.
As he reached the door, Vanessa called after him.
“You think those recordings will save you?
Check the tablet.”
Ivy opened its video folder.
Every file was gone.
“I didn’t delete them,” she whispered.
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
“The family cloud account belongs to me.
Children lose things.”
Hannah’s shoulders folded inward.
“You erased what she did for me.”
Daniel took the tablet from Ivy’s shaking hands.
“No.
She erased her own excuse.”
His phone sounded.
A court notice appeared on the screen: Vanessa had obtained an emergency order freezing Daniel’s personal accounts and preventing him from selling or entering the house without permission.
Grant looked over Vanessa’s shoulder.
“The order is effective immediately.”
Vanessa opened the front door.
May you like
“You wanted a fight, Daniel.
Now your daughters can see what happens when you choose one family over another.”
