Chapter 2: Eleven Recordings
Hannah lifted her head, but no words came.
Daniel crossed the room and knelt beside her.
“Did Vanessa tell you to eat here?”
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.
“She said the table was for her family.”
“I never said that!” Vanessa cried.
“She misunderstood me.”
Ivy tapped the tablet.
A video began playing.
Vanessa’s voice filled the silent room.
“Stop asking for more food, Hannah.
Your father isn’t here to protect you.”
Daniel’s hand tightened around the tablet.
“How many recordings are there?”
“Eleven,” Ivy whispered.
“I started recording because nobody believed Hannah.”
Vanessa reached for the screen.
“Those clips are taken out of context!”
Daniel stood and stepped between her and his daughters.
“Go upstairs, girls.
Pack a bag.”
Vanessa’s face lost its color.
“You’re throwing me out over a few leftovers?”
“No,” Daniel said.
“I’m getting my daughters somewhere safe while I learn what else you’ve done.”
Then Hannah caught his sleeve.
“Dad, there’s something else.
Mom left an envelope for me before she was gone.
Vanessa found it last week.”
Daniel froze.
“What envelope?”
Before Hannah could answer, Vanessa’s phone lit up on the table.
A bank notification appeared—and Daniel recognized the account number immediately.
