Chapter 9: The Last Move

They left before dawn.

Leo thought it was an adventure.

Ruby had told him they were going to a special house with a big yard, and he had accepted this completely and immediately, because he was two and the world was still mostly made of things that could be trusted.

He fell asleep again in the car with his bear and his head against Ruby's arm.

The house was forty minutes outside the city — a property Vincent owned under a corporate name, a place his men used occasionally.

It was plain from the outside.

Inside it was warm and stocked and had a yard that backed onto a tree line.

Leo woke up when the car stopped, looked out the window, and said: "Big yard."

"Told you," Ruby said.

He was satisfied.

By mid-morning, Leo was in the yard with one of Vincent's men — a quiet, patient man named Sal who turned out to be extraordinarily good at pretending to be a train — and Ruby was inside watching her phone.

Vincent called at eleven.

"Marcus came to the house this morning," he said.

Ruby stood up.

"And?"

"He came alone.

No backup.

That was his first mistake."

"What happened?"

"He made his case.

Said he'd go to the police, said he'd release a story to three journalists he has on retainer, said he'd make sure Leo ended up in the system while I dealt with the fallout." A pause.

"He was very calm about it.

Very thorough."

"He always is."

"When he finished, I told him that the drive had already been transferred to federal custody.

I told him Brennan's name.

I told him the warrant was in process."

The line was quiet for a moment.

"How did he take it?" Ruby asked.

"He sat very still for about ten seconds," Vincent said.

"Then he said, 'You're bluffing.'"

"What did you say?"

"I said, 'Call Brennan and ask him.'"

Ruby exhaled slowly.

"Did he leave?"

"He left," Vincent said.

"But not before he said something I want you to know."

"What?"

"He said, 'The woman you're protecting isn't who you think she is.

Claire Maddox was involved in things that can't be cleaned up with a federal handshake.

Ask her about Louisville.'"

Ruby closed her eyes.

Louisville.

She had hoped that name would never surface.

"Ruby," Vincent said.

"What happened in Louisville?"

She opened her eyes.

"It was the second job," she said.

"Not the third.

I didn't know what I was carrying.

I found out later — it was financial records.

Routing information for accounts that funded people Marcus was protecting.

I didn't understand what I had at the time."

"But you kept a copy."

"Yes."

"Is it on the drive?"

"Yes.

It's all on the drive."

A long pause.

"Brennan already flagged it," Vincent said.

"He called me twenty minutes ago.

He said it's the strongest piece of evidence in the entire file."

Ruby sat down.

"So Marcus knows that too," she said.

"Which is why he came this morning.

He was trying to get ahead of it." Vincent's voice was steady.

"He didn't.

Brennan moved the timeline up.

The warrant lands tonight."

She pressed her hand flat against the table.

"It's almost over," she said.

"Almost," Vincent said.

"Stay with Leo.

I'll come tonight."

She looked out the window.

Leo was running in circles in the yard while Sal made train sounds with his mouth.

"Vincent," she said.

"Yes."

"Thank you for not asking me about Louisville before you called Brennan."

A brief silence.

"You told me the truth when it mattered," he said.

"That was enough."

He ended the call.

May you like

Ruby set the phone down and watched Leo fall dramatically into the grass, laughing at nothing, the way children do when the world is temporarily exactly right.

She let herself watch him for a long time.
