Chapter 8: What He Left Behind

They made it back in forty minutes.

Vincent had called ahead — two words, nothing more — and by the time the car reached the gate, there were three men Ruby hadn't seen before standing in the driveway.

One of them was already inside.

She was out of the car before it fully stopped.

She took the stairs two at a time and pushed Leo's door open.

He was in his bed.

Asleep.

Bear tucked under his chin, exactly as she'd left him.

She stood in the doorway and breathed.

Donna appeared behind her.

"He hasn't moved.

I've been right outside his door since you called."

Ruby nodded.

She couldn't speak yet.

She walked to the bed and crouched beside it, close enough to hear him breathing.

In, out.

Small and steady and real.

She stayed there until her heart slowed.

Then she heard Vincent's voice downstairs — quiet, controlled, the kind of quiet that meant something was wrong.

She went down.

He was in the entrance hall with one of his men, looking at something on a phone screen.

When Ruby came down, he turned it toward her.

A photograph.

Taken from outside the house.

Through the garden gate.

It showed the garden — the patch of dirt where Leo had been playing that morning, the plastic spoon still sticking up from the soil.

Timestamp: 8:47 PM.

Twenty minutes after they'd left.

"He was here," Ruby said.

"He was watching," Vincent corrected.

"He wanted us to know he could get close.

That's what the text was — not a threat to act.

A demonstration."

"It worked," Ruby said flatly.

"Yes." Vincent handed the phone back to his man and looked at Ruby.

"Which means he's more rattled than he's showing.

Men who are confident don't demonstrate.

They act."

"Or he's setting up the act."

"Possibly." He paused.

"The drive is already with Brennan.

I sent it from the car."

Ruby looked up.

"How?"

"Encrypted transfer.

Brennan's been standing by since I called him this afternoon." He met her eyes.

"He reviewed the index in the last hour.

He says it's enough."

"Enough for what?"

"Enough for a warrant.

Enough to freeze Hale's accounts and pull his travel.

Enough to make moving against you a very public mistake."

Ruby sat down on the bottom stair.

She hadn't planned to — her legs just made the decision.

"How long?" she asked.

"Brennan said seventy-two hours for the warrant.

Maybe less."

"Marcus gave us forty-eight."

"I know."

She looked at her hands.

"He'll make a move before the warrant lands," she said.

"That's what he does.

He moves right at the edge of the window."

"Then we don't give him a clean edge." Vincent sat down on the stair beside her — not close, but close enough.

"Tomorrow morning, I'm moving Leo to a secondary location.

Somewhere Marcus doesn't have on file.

You'll go with him."

"And you?"

"I'll stay here.

If Marcus comes, I want him to come to me."

"That's not—"

"Ruby." He said it firmly, not unkindly.

"I've been handling men like Marcus Hale since I was twenty-three years old.

I know how to make them come through the front door instead of the back one."

She was quiet.

"Leo will be scared if he wakes up somewhere new," she said.

"That's why you'll be there."

She looked at him.

"You trust me with him," she said.

It came out less like a statement and more like something she was still trying to understand.

"I trusted you with him the first night," Vincent said.

"I just didn't tell you."

Upstairs, a small voice called out — not frightened, just awake.

"Ruby?"

She stood immediately.

"I'm here," she called up.

"Coming, buddy."

She was halfway up the stairs when Vincent spoke behind her.

"Claire," he said quietly.

She stopped.

"That name," he said.

"It doesn't have to stay buried."

She didn't turn around.

May you like

But she didn't move for a moment either.

Then she went up to Leo.
