Ruby didn't sleep that first night.
She lay in a room bigger than her entire apartment, staring at the ceiling, wondering what she had walked into.
In the morning, Leo padded into her room before sunrise, dragging a stuffed bear by one ear.
He didn't say a word.
He just climbed up beside her and pressed his small back against her side.
Ruby held very still, afraid to break whatever this was.
By the end of the first week, the mansion staff were watching her differently.
Not with warmth.
With suspicion.
The head housekeeper, a sharp-faced woman named Donna, stopped her in the hallway.
"Don't get comfortable," Donna said quietly.
"The last woman Leo liked disappeared after two weeks.
Mr.
Romano sent her away without a word."
Ruby felt her stomach drop.
"Why?"
Donna glanced toward Vincent's office, then back at Ruby.
"Because Leo started calling her Mama."
Ruby turned cold.
That evening, Vincent summoned her.
He was standing at the window with his back to her when she entered.
"Leo asked me something today," he said, without turning around.
Ruby waited.
"He asked me if you were going to d\*e like his mother did."
The silence stretched between them.
Then Vincent finally turned — and his expression wasn't hard.
It was broken.
"I don't know how to answer him," he said.
"So I need to know something first."
He looked directly at her.
"Who are you, Ruby Jenkins?
Because I ran your background check — and something doesn't add up."
