Chapter 2: The Envelope With My Name On It

Part 2 ⬇️
I didn't sleep that night.
I kept hearing Elliot's voice — *"You'll understand one day."*
The next morning, I drove to Robert's office.
I told myself I was only going to sign something and leave.
But when I walked in, two people were already seated across from Robert's desk.
A man and a woman, both around my age.
They looked up when I entered.
The woman's eyes went cold immediately.
"So you're her," she said.
"I'm sorry?"
"The woman my brother threw everything away for."
I looked at Robert.
He cleared his throat.
"Melanie, this is Dana and Phillip.
Elliot's sister and brother."
Dana stood up slowly.
"He left you the letter," she said.
"The one that explains everything.
We've been waiting a year for that letter and he gave it to *you.*"
"I didn't know anything about a letter."
"Of course you didn't." Her voice was sharp.
"He protected you right up until the end."
Robert slid an envelope across the desk toward me.
My name was written on the front in Elliot's handwriting.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Then Phillip spoke for the first time, quietly, almost to himself.
"She doesn't even know why he left her, does she."
It wasn't a question.
Dana turned to her brother.
Something passed between them — fast, silent, and heavy with a secret I didn't have.
I picked up the envelope.
