Chapter 1: The Man Who Saw Everything

A man I dated for only six months—one year ago—put me in his will without ever telling me.
But when I tried to refuse whatever he'd left me, his lawyer said, "If you don't come, his family gets nothing."
His name was Elliot.
We were only together for six months, but I had never felt so completely seen by another person.
Elliot noticed everything.
I never checked the weather, so after our second date, he started carrying an extra umbrella for me.
If I went quiet, he somehow knew whether I needed advice or just a hug.
I genuinely thought I'd found the man I was going to grow old with.
Then, almost overnight, Elliot changed.
He canceled plans he'd once protected fiercely.
His replies became shorter.
He stopped smiling.
Whenever I asked what was wrong, he said he was tired.
Then one night, he showed up at my door with tears in his eyes.
"You deserve someone who can actually give you a future."
I stared at him.
Before leaving, he kissed my forehead.
"I'm sorry.
You'll understand one day."
The next morning, he ended our relationship over the phone.
Less than two minutes.
No explanation.
I cried for weeks, replaying everything I'd said and done, trying to figure out what had made him stop loving me.
Eventually, I forced myself to move on.
A full year passed.
Then, one Tuesday afternoon, my phone rang.
"Am I speaking with Melanie?"
"Yes."
"My name is Robert.
I'm the attorney handling Elliot's estate."
I froze.
"Estate?"
There was a pause.
"I'm very sorry.
Elliot passed away three weeks ago."
I sank onto my kitchen floor.
I hadn't even known this.
Then Robert said something I understood even less.
"Your name appears in Elliot's will."
"That can't be right.
We dated for six months.
We haven't spoken in a year."
"There's no mistake.
He named you specifically."
I told Robert I didn't want anything.
I wasn't Elliot's wife.
I wasn't his family.
Whatever he'd left should go to his brother and sister.
Robert was silent for a moment.
"Melanie, if you don't come, his family can't receive their inheritance."
My stomach dropped.
