Chapter 8: The Name She Had Waited to Hear

Daniel folded the laboratory result and knelt before Lily.

“I don’t need this paper to decide whether I will protect you.”

“But what does it say?”

“It says I’m your father.”

Lily looked at Anna.

“Really?”

Anna nodded, covering her mouth as tears ran over her fingers.

Daniel opened his arms but waited.

“May I hug you now?”

Lily stepped into him so quickly that he nearly lost his balance.

Rose pressed between them, clutching his tie, while Anna rested her forehead against Daniel’s shoulder.

“You came,” Daniel whispered to Anna.

“I nearly didn’t.”

“I should have searched harder.”

“You should have trusted what we had.”

“I know.”

She pulled back.

“I cannot pretend six years disappeared because the truth arrived today.”

“I won’t ask you to.

Let me earn tomorrow.”

Victor approached Lily with a plate of bread and fruit.

“You still need breakfast.”

Lily wiped her cheeks.

“Are you Vanessa’s daddy?”

“I am.”

“Are you angry with me?”

Victor set the plate into her hands.

“No, child.

I’m grateful you were braver than the adults.”

Three months later, Daniel and Anna sat together in a courthouse as Vanessa stood before the judge.

Lily remained outside with Victor and Rose, but Daniel had promised to tell her the truth in words she could understand.

The judge looked over the evidence.

“Ms.

Hale, you have pleaded guilty to forgery, unlawful confinement, falsifying a child-welfare complaint, and attempted financial fraud.”

Vanessa gripped the edge of the table.

“My actions were meant to prevent a public scandal.”

“You created one by treating human beings as obstacles.”

Her attorney touched her arm, but Vanessa pulled away.

“Daniel would have lost everything if Anna appeared.”

Daniel stood when the judge addressed him.

“Mr.

Mercer, do you wish to speak?”

“Yes.

She took six years from two children, trapped their mother in a clinic, and tried to have them separated when the truth reached me.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“I gave you the life you wanted.”

“No.

You gave me a lie comfortable enough that I stopped asking questions.”

The judge closed the file.

“Ms.

Hale, the sentence is four years in custody, followed by three years of supervised release.

You are forbidden from contacting Anna, Lily, Rose, or Daniel.

Restitution will be determined from the losses caused by your fraudulent filings.”

Vanessa’s shoulders stiffened.

“You’ll all discover Anna isn’t fit for your world.”

Anna rose beside Daniel.

“My daughters are my world.

Daniel is learning how to enter it.”

Vanessa looked at Victor.

“Dad, say something.”

He met her eyes.

“I will visit when you are ready to tell the truth without blaming a child.”

The officer opened the side door.

Vanessa paused before leaving.

“You chose them over me.”

Victor’s voice cracked, but he did not look away.

“I chose what was right when you refused to.”

Outside the courtroom, Lily ran to Daniel.

“Is it finished?”

“It is.”

“Can she take Mama again?”

“No.

There is an order protecting all of you.”

Victor bent down beside her.

“And I will help make sure it is followed.”

Lily studied him.

“Even though she’s your daughter?”

“Especially because she is my daughter.

Loving someone does not mean hiding what they did.”

Six months later, Daniel stood in Anna’s small garden holding two paper crowns.

Rose wore one crookedly while Lily inspected the other.

“What are these for?” Lily asked.

“Today is the anniversary of the day you walked into that wedding.”

“That was a terrible day.”

“It was also the day I found you.”

Anna came through the back door carrying a cake.

Daniel reached for it, but she shook her head.

“You’ll drop it.”

“I run three companies.”

“And you burned toast yesterday.”

Lily laughed.

“Mama wins.”

Daniel placed a hand over his heart.

“I see how this family works now.”

Anna set the cake down and looked at him.

“You said you would earn tomorrow.”

“I remember.”

“You came to every school meeting.

You sat beside Rose all night when she was ill.

You gave us a home without demanding that I forgive you on a schedule.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Is that enough?”

“It is enough for today.”

He smiled.

“Then I’ll earn tomorrow when it arrives.”

Lily climbed onto the bench between them.

“Can I call you Daddy in front of everyone now?”

Daniel kissed the top of her head.

“You can call me Daddy anywhere.”

Rose lifted both hands toward him.

Daniel picked her up, and Anna leaned against his shoulder while Lily cut the first uneven slice of cake.

The little girl who had once begged not to be left alone now sat between both parents, and this time, when she reached for her father’s hand, he was already reaching for hers.

Truth may arrive late, but courage can still open the door that lies tried to keep closed.
