Chapter 6: The Truth at the Door

The main doors opened before Vanessa could speak.

Anna stood between a nurse and a taxi driver, one hand gripping the doorframe.

Her clothes were creased, and a medical band remained around her wrist.

“Mama!” Lily ran down the aisle with Rose.

Anna dropped to her knees and caught both girls against her.

“You found him,” she said through tears.

“My brave girl found him.”

Lily buried her face in Anna’s shoulder.

“He didn’t know us.”

“I know.”

Daniel stopped several feet away.

“Anna, may I come closer?”

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Yes.”

He knelt across from her.

Rose reached toward his tie, but Lily stayed between them.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I never received your letters.”

“And I received one carrying your signature.”

“I didn’t write it.”

“I spent six years believing you chose your inheritance over Lily.”

“I spent six years believing you chose money over me.”

Anna looked toward Vanessa.

“She made sure we both believed the worst.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You came here willingly.

Stop pretending you were held.”

The nurse stepped forward.

“A staff member took her phone and identification.

When I questioned Dr.

Mercer, he told me Miss Hale had authorized it.”

“I authorized private care,” Vanessa replied.

“You authorized silence,” Anna said.

Daniel looked at Anna’s wristband.

“Why were you brought there?”

“Because I found the technician who changed Lily’s result.

He agreed to meet me yesterday.

Instead, Vanessa arrived.”

“That never happened,” Vanessa said.

Anna removed a plastic folder from beneath her coat.

“This is the original report.

It names Daniel as Lily’s biological father.”

Miles examined the seal.

“I’ll verify it independently.”

“You won’t need to,” Vanessa said.

“Even if Lily is his, Anna abandoned her children at a bus station.

I have already contacted child services.”

Lily clung to her mother.

“You said Mama told us to wait somewhere safe,” Daniel said.

“That is abandonment under the law.”

Anna rose unsteadily.

“You arranged the meeting.

You sent the driver.

You took me away from them.”

“Prove it.”

A woman in a navy suit entered with two uniformed officials.

“I’m Helen Brooks from Child and Family Services,” she said.

“We received an urgent complaint involving two unattended children.”

Vanessa smiled for the first time since Anna arrived.

“The children should be removed until their mother’s fitness can be assessed.”

Anna’s knees buckled.

Daniel caught her elbow.

“No one is taking them,” he said.

Helen opened her folder.

“Mr.

Daniel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“The complaint also claims you are a danger to the children and used money to conceal their existence.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You named me too?”

“I did what was necessary.”

“You planned to remove all of us from their lives.”

“I planned to protect our future.”

Anna pulled away from Daniel.

“Don’t let them separate us.”

Helen crouched in front of Lily.

“Did your mother tell you where she was going?”

“Yes.

She said to stay by the ticket office and call Daddy if she didn’t return.”

“Did she leave you food?”

Lily showed her a nearly empty bag.

“Sandwiches, milk, diapers, and her last money.”

Helen stood.

“That does not match the complaint.”

“Then close it,” Vanessa said.

“I cannot.

The report alleges immediate danger, and it came from a verified corporate account.”

Miles looked over Helen’s shoulder.

“That account belongs to Daniel’s executive office.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Only three people have access.”

Miles pointed at the digital signature.

Vanessa’s confidence returned.

“And there is your proof.

The complaint was filed under Daniel’s own authorization.”

Helen turned the final page toward him.

The electronic signature was Daniel’s—but the confirmation code had been sent to Vanessa’s private phone.
