Chapter 2: The Letter Beneath the Blanket

The groom stepped down from the altar, his hands shaking.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“Lily,” the girl whispered.

“Mama said you would recognize us.”

The bride seized his arm.

“They’re lying.

Security, remove them now!”

“No!” the groom shouted.

He knelt before Lily and stared at the toddler’s face.

Around her neck was a small silver locket—the same one he had given someone years earlier.

“Where did you get that?” he asked.

“Mama gave it to me before she went away,” Lily said.

“She told me to find you if she didn’t come back.”

The groom opened the locket and found an old photograph of himself beside a smiling young woman.

On the back, in familiar handwriting, were six words:

“Tell him what his fiancée did.”

A gasp swept through the hall.

The bride lunged for the photograph.

“Give me that!”

But the groom pulled it away.

“You know this woman?”

Before she could answer, Lily reached inside the toddler’s blanket and removed a sealed envelope bearing the groom’s name.

“She said you must read this before you marry her.”

The bride’s expression changed—and she quietly ordered security to lock the doors.
