Chapter 5: The Man Who Had Been Waiting

David showed Elena the message without a word.

She read it.

Read it again.

"He knew," she said.

"He knew about today."

"She told him." David's voice was very quiet.

"She told him I'd end it.

She had a plan for this."

Elena looked at the front door — still closed, the sound of a car pulling away fading down the drive.

"She wasn't panicking," Elena said.

"Not really.

She was managing."

David typed back one word: *Who are you?*

The reply came in under a minute.

*Daniel Marsh.

I think you know the name.*

David's jaw tightened.

He did know the name.

Elena watched his face and knew that he knew.

"Who is he?" she asked.

"He was her business partner.

Two years ago, before she said the company dissolved." David set the phone face-down on the hall table.

"She told me they had a falling out.

That she hadn't spoken to him since."

"And the apartment."

"And the apartment." He picked the phone back up.

"Ryan."

Ryan was still standing near the wall, hands in his pockets, looking like a man waiting for a sentence to be handed down.

"Did you know about Daniel Marsh?"

Ryan closed his eyes briefly.

"She mentioned a name once.

I didn't push."

"But you heard it."

"I heard it."

David looked at the ceiling for a moment.

Then he typed back to the number: *Not today.

Don't contact me again tonight.*

He put the phone in his pocket.

"Elena." He turned to face her fully.

"I owe you an apology that I don't have the right words for yet.

But I need you to know — what she threatened you with, regarding Lily.

That will never happen.

I will make sure of that personally."

Elena held his gaze.

"I know you mean that."

"I do mean it."

"I know." She paused.

"But David — Daniel Marsh reaching out tonight, already, within minutes of her leaving.

That's not a man who just found out.

That's a man who has been ready."

David nodded slowly.

"She wasn't just hiding a secret," Elena said.

"She was running two lives at the same time.

And one of them was always meant to be the backup."

From the reception room, the sound of chairs scraping.

Guests beginning to understand that the evening was over.

David's mother appeared in the doorway at the end of the hall, her face composed in the careful way of a woman who had been holding herself together for the last twenty minutes.

"David," she said.

"People are asking."

"Tell them the reception is cancelled.

Tell them I'm grateful they came and I'll be in touch." He paused.

"And tell them the food is theirs.

They should eat."

His mother looked at Elena.

Something passed between them — not warmth exactly, but recognition.

"Are you all right?" his mother asked.

"I'm fine," Elena said.

"Thank you, Margaret."

Margaret nodded once and went back to the reception room.

Lily had fallen asleep standing up, her cheek against Elena's arm.

The way she only did when she had pushed past exhaustion and her body had simply made the decision for her.

"Let me take her," David said.

"I have her."

"Elena."

"I have her, David." She shifted Lily's weight gently.

"What are you going to do about Daniel Marsh?"

"I'm going to find out exactly who he is and what he wants."

"He wants his son."

"Maybe.

Or maybe he wants something else and his son is the leverage." David looked at the phone in his pocket.

"Nicole didn't tell him to reach out tonight because she wanted him to have a relationship with Marcus.

She told him to reach out tonight because she wanted me to feel like I'd lost something."

Elena looked at him.

"She's not done," he said.

The front door opened.

They both turned.

It was one of the caterers, stepping in from outside, looking confused.

"Sorry — the bride asked me to bring this back in."

May you like

He was holding a small white envelope.

David's name was written on the front in Nicole's handwriting.
