Elena stumbled out of that dark room, blinking against the light, her daughter's small arms wrapped tight around her waist.
David stared at his bride.
His voice dropped low.
"How long was she in there?"
The bride lifted her chin.
"She was causing a scene.
I handled it."
"You *locked* her in a closet.
On my wedding day."
Guests had gathered in the hallway now.
No one spoke.
Elena pressed her daughter's head gently against her shoulder.
Her hands were shaking, but her voice was steady.
"There's something you need to know, David.
About why she wanted me out of the way."
The bride took a sharp step forward.
"Don't you dare—"
"I found something," Elena said quietly.
"Before the ceremony.
In her bag.
Next to the key."
She reached into her daughter's small coat pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
David's face went pale as he read it.
The room went completely silent.
Then his best man — standing near the back — slowly looked away.
He already knew.
