Chapter 1: The House He Built With His Hands

While I was away, my parents sold the small house my late husband had left me and used the money to purchase my sister the home she had always dreamed of.
Dad told me, "You're a widow.
Stop holding on to the past." My sister laughed and said, "At least his house finally did something useful." I started laughing.
She immediately snapped, "What's so funny?" I smiled.
"I was just wondering who would be stupid enough to buy it."
Four months after my husband Wyatt d*ed in a tragic accident, I came home from a work trip and discovered that my biological family had secretly sold our house.
I stepped into my parents' living room and found my spoiled younger sister, Alyssa, waving around a glossy brochure featuring a huge newly built mansion.
"We close on February 25th!" she squealed.
"I'm curious," I said, keeping my voice completely calm.
"Whose house did you steal to pay for it?"
The entire room fell silent.
My father, Raymond, cleared his throat and slipped straight into his usual patriarchal arrogance.
"That property was sitting empty.
You're a widow, so stop clinging to the past.
I simply liquidated a dead asset so I could help your sister secure her future."
Alyssa rolled her eyes and gave me a cruel little smirk.
"Don't turn this into some dramatic scene, Sabrina.
The ink is already dry.
And honestly?
At least his useless little shack finally did something productive for this family."
His useless shack.
Nine years of my late husband's bl**d, sweat, and hard work dismissed as a "useless shack." I had already made my father hand over the settlement documents.
He had sold the property for $182,000 in cash.
Using a generic emergency Power of Attorney, he forged my consent and transferred every last penny into Alyssa's new McMansion.
They expected me to scream.
They expected me to fall apart.
Instead, I calmly set my fork down on my porcelain plate.
And I laughed.
It was a cold, razor-edged sound.
My family stared at me as their smug confidence slowly turned into deep confusion.
They thought they had achieved a permanent victory.
What they had forgotten was my profession: I am a licensed Real Estate Appraiser.
More importantly, they had no idea about the terrifying secret hidden beneath Wyatt's house.
The ground underneath it was a geological nightmare, a subterranean monster that only my husband had known how to structurally manage.
And my father had sold the property "As-Is" to a fast-cash buyer who had never bothered to inspect the foundation.
"What the hell is so funny?" Alyssa snapped, although her defiance was beginning to crack.
I looked at my father, then back at my sister.
"I was just wondering," I whispered with a cold smile, "who in God's name would be dumb enough to pay cash for that 'useless shack' without checking the crawl space?"
Alyssa's face turned completely white.
My father's jaw dropped open.
But the fear I saw in their eyes was nothing compared to the trap that was already waiting for them on February 25th...

What happens when February 25th arrives and the truth about that foundation finally comes out?
