Chapter 2: What the Little Girl Saw

My heart was pounding as I waited for him to answer.

"She told Rob that the tattoo was a secret," his brother said slowly.

"That you'd been planning it for weeks with someone else.

That a man helped you pick the design."

I felt the air leave my body.

"That's not true," I whispered.

"I chose it myself.

I just showed the artist her drawing and he copied it."

"I know that.

But Rob doesn't.

And there's more."

My hand tightened on the phone.

"She told him the man hugged you when it was done.

That she saw it."

I couldn't speak.

My granddaughter had come with me that day.

The artist had given me a quick hug goodbye — the kind any stranger might give.

She must have seen it and not understood what it meant.

But Rob had.

I hung up and went straight to find him.

He was sitting at the kitchen table, not looking at me.

"Rob, I need you to listen to me."

He didn't move.

"Whatever she told you — she's six years old.

She didn't understand what she saw."

He finally looked up.

His eyes were red.

"Then explain it to me," he said quietly.

"Because she wasn't the only one who told me something."

My stomach dropped.

"What do you mean?"

He reached into his pocket and placed his phone face-up on the table.

There was a photo on the screen.

And the moment I saw it, I understood why he hadn't spoken to me in days.
