Chapter 2: Zero Discretionary Authority

Part 2 — continued from the comments 👇

---

Natalie arrived at the hospital before sunrise.

She didn't knock.

She simply walked in, set her briefcase on the chair beside my bed, and looked at my daughter sleeping in the bassinet.

"She's beautiful," Natalie said quietly.

Then she opened the briefcase.

"Sign here.

And here."

I signed without reading.

I had written those documents myself two years ago.

I knew exactly what they did.

By 6 a.m., the Pembroke Family Trust had a new primary directive.

Tristan arrived at nine, carrying a paper bag of supplements and wearing the careful smile of a man who believed he had already won.

He pushed open the door.

He stopped.

Natalie was seated in the corner, legs crossed, reading from a folder.

The smile disappeared.

"What is she doing here?"

"Visiting," I said.

"Charlotte." His voice dropped to a warning.

"Whatever you're thinking—"

"The trust amendment was filed at six fifty-two this morning," Natalie said without looking up.

"Congratulations, Tristan.

You now hold exactly zero discretionary authority over the Pembroke estate."

The paper bag slipped from his hand.

He looked at me.

I looked back at him the same way he had looked at me the night before.

Like an employee whose position was no longer needed.

"This isn't over," he said.

I glanced down at my daughter.

"No," I said.

"It's just starting."

Then my phone lit up on the bedside table.

An unknown number.

And the name on the screen made Natalie go completely still.
