Chapter 1: The Door He Closed Himself

When I was fully dilated and in the middle of labor, my husband confessed, "The truth is, I already have a son.
The baby you're carrying won't have my last name.
I'll make it up to you with money." I simply nodded.
The following day, he arrived with supplements and opened the door, but the sight waiting for him inside left him in a complete rage...
The thirty-seventh contraction tore through me.
The harsh fluorescent lights above blurred as sweat stung my eyes.
Then I heard it.
The steady, self-important click of expensive leather shoes against the hospital floor.
They weren't the rushed footsteps of a nervous father.
They were the controlled, deliberate steps of a CEO walking into a boardroom.
"Mr.
Pembroke, this is a delivery room!
You can't come in here!"
I struggled to turn my head.
Tristan, my husband of four years, stood in the doorway.
His custom-tailored suit looked perfectly pressed, as though he had just stepped out of a business meeting.
And directly behind him stood Chloe.
My former intern.
One hand was deliberately placed over the prominent curve of her pregnant stomach.
Tristan walked toward my bed with both hands buried inside his pockets.
He didn't touch me.
He didn't offer a single comforting word.
Instead, he studied the fetal monitor with the detached expression of a businessman reviewing disappointing financial results.
At the very moment I was suffering the most, risking my life to deliver his child, Tristan calmly delivered the words that would destroy everything.
"Chloe has already given birth to a son for me.
He's fifteen months old.
The Pembroke family needs a male heir," he said without the slightest emotion.
"Therefore, the child you're carrying will not be included in the Trust."
For a moment, it felt as though all the air had been pulled out of the room.
The emptiness in his eyes hurt more than the physical pain.
He wasn't looking at me as his wife.
He was looking at me like an employee whose position was no longer needed.
A sharp cry suddenly broke through the room.
"It's a girl!" the nurse exclaimed as she carefully placed the tiny, squirming baby against my chest.
Tristan looked at his daughter.
He didn't reach for her.
He didn't even move closer.
Instead, he glanced down at his expensive watch and quietly said, "I'm taking Chloe home."
The heavy doors closed behind him with a soft click.
I looked down at the fragile little girl resting against me.
She hadn't even taken her first proper breath before her own father had already decided to strip away half of her identity.
My hand shook uncontrollably.
Yet my eyes remained completely dry.
One thought suddenly became crystal clear.
The Pembroke family's $2 billion empire existed because of a legal structure I had personally created.
And the person who held sole control over that trust wasn't Tristan.
It was me.
I reached for my phone.
Natalie, the most ruthless attorney in Atlanta, answered in her usual cheerful voice.
"Charlotte!
Congratulations!
Is it a boy or a girl?"
"Natalie."
My voice came out completely flat.
The line immediately went silent.
Natalie knew that tone.
It was the sound of someone declaring war.
"What happened?" she asked.
"Tristan has a secret fifteen-month-old son.
He brought his mistress into the delivery room, and now he wants to remove my daughter from the trust."
Natalie drew in a sharp breath.
"That absolute bastard.
What do you want me to do?"
I stared through the hospital window at the city stretching beneath the morning light.
My voice turned cold.
"I need you to do three things.
Tonight.
He closed that door himself, and now I'm simply deciding when to open it."
